William Chard studied at Chelsea in the 1940's having served a spell in prison as a conscientious objector. Other friends around this time were Prunella Clough (1919-99), the sculptor Shelley Fausset (1920-94) who worked as Henry Moore's assistant from 1946-48, and the painter and sculptor John Lavrin, who married Suncana, the daughter of the well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, and worked as an assistant for him.
