While a student at the Glasgow School of Art & Design he was selected to exhibit work at The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. Since his first public exhibition in 1961 his work gained critical acclaim and commercial success.

He was the recipient of the prestigious Ben Truman Prize in 1977.
