2000 Mixed Media, Battlefield with Barbed Wire. A devastating and arresting battlefield composition by the British listed artist Ronald Olley b. A barbed wire fence marks a boundary on disputed territory, with the suspended corpse of a soldier providing the central focus.
Olley used his own experience of the Second World War in his military scenes, and this is most evident here, in this expressive and emotive work. A sobering reflection of the reality of war. The artist has used both oil and watercolour, with acrylic details.
Well-presented in a light wood frame and off-white mount, as shown. The frame has some minor scuffing and marks. Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this fine collection of works from the studio of the British artist Ronald Olley. Some of the works bear the stamp'ORO', which stands for Owen Ronald Olley, the artist's birthname. Ronald Olley was born in 1923, and studied at both the Harrow Art School and the Central School, London. His father served as a soldier throughout the First World War, and Olley joined the army in 1942. He witnessed the bombing of Bath, England, before being stationed at El Alamein in Egypt, and Italy. As well as landscape and figure painting, Olley has had numerous commissions for portraits, mainly of women and children. As one of the last artists to paint World War II from personal experience, a significant part of his portfolio depicts battlegrounds and war-torn landscapes.
These have been painted using significant research and photographs, alongside Olley's own knowledge of the front line. His work has been shown at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, as well as in exhibitions at the Medici Gallery and at Duncan Campbell.
His pictures have been bought by collectors in Europe, the USA, Australia, Africa and Japan. You can view our full collection of these here. Size: 21.5 x 30.5cm (8.5" x 12"). Framed Size: 41.9 x 49.7cm (16.5" x 19.6").

Benjamin Diamond opened a picture framing factory in Midtown Manhattan in the early 20th century. Originally known as Royal Art, the business worked closely with artists and museum institutions, developing a reputation for creating fine frames. Royal Art passed through the family and eventually evolved into Sulis, now run by Benjamin's grandson Bill, and his son Dan. We handpick all our stock and we've grown into a ten-strong team of art historians, photographers, restorers, studio technicians and despatchers. We relocated to our Corsham studio in early 2020, leaving behind our small garden workshops in Bradford-on-Avon that had been our base for several successful years. We are always striving to connect people with the art they love. Each week we add new artworks to our extensive catalogue, across all styles, subjects, colours and periods. At the heart of Sulis, we rescue and restore lost and forgotten works, giving you the opportunity to find unique pieces and discover art in a new and different way.
