Rauschenberg was an American photographer and painter, who was close to pop art but never really adhering to it, triggering instead an unprecedented correspondence with abstract expressionism. He found items that interested him on the streets of New York City and took them to his studio where they could become an integral part of his work. In particular his series of works which he had called "Combines" served as examples to show that the boundaries between art and sculpture could be broken, so that both could be present in a single work of art. At first the critics saw the "Combines", more in terms of the formal aspects of art, where form, color, structure and composition were available to them. This 1960s view has changed over time, so more recently critics and art historians see the "Combines" as carrying encoded messages that are difficult to decipher, as there is no apparent order to the presentation of objects.
