Though he considers himself a Neo-Expressionist, Max's work is also closely related to the Pop Art movement of the post-war era.

Born Peter Max Finkelstein October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany, he travelled extensively before settling with his family in New York, NY. He went on to study at the Art Students League of New York, where he developed his lifelong painting practice. A political activist and environmentalist, Max has designed for past presidents throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including a painting to commemorate the signing of a peace accord in 1994.
