This is a superb piece of Original Irish Art, a Mixed Media Painting in watercolour and pastels of the captain of the RMS Titanic, Captain Edward Smith, by the Irish artist John Stewart, who has signed it to the bottom right, please see photos. The whole world knows the story of the Titanic and it's sinking. Built in Belfast and thought to be unsinkable she was captained by Edward John Smith (27 January 1850 - 15 April 1912) RD, RNR.

John Stewart was born in 1973 in Belfast and studied Art at school. In 1989 he was an apprentice stained glass artist at a Belfast glass studio, sketching painting and engraving glass. In 1995 he became a professional signwriter and poster writer as well as a wall mural artist. He has been commissioned numerous times with the Arts Council Northern Ireland and community groups working on projects and painting large scaled murals in Belfast. His first exhibition of paintings took place in Belfast in 2008 and since then he has become a professional artist working in fine art painting in various mediums. He is well known for capturing Belfast's industrial times, the Harland and Wolff shipyard and Titanic related subjects. This super painting of Captain Smith has a newspaper account of the sinking as the backdrop with Captain Smith's portrait in an impressionist style. It's simply stunning, a fabulous piece of art.
