He was a lovely man and we have enjoyed his beautiful artwork for many years. However, we are now moving house and it is time to allow someone else to appreciate his talents. John Booth was born in the Glasgow tenements in 1943 and moved to England as a young man.He began work as a roofer for a local company in Stockport and, 35 years later, studied art at Stockport College. During a lecture in which students were asked to speak of their passions John thought of bitumen:'I love bitumen because I can handle it better than anybody else..... I have worked with bitumen all my life and it is part of me'. Somehow the college was brave enough to allow him to bring his bitumen burner into college (one false move on the canvas could be incendiary) and a new art form was born.
After completing his studies with a distinction and the college's Turner prize for best student, he set up his studio at Vernon Mill in Stockport which became home to a thriving local arts scene. He exhibited in cities all around the UK and Europe with private collections being held in countries like the USA, Italy, Germany, Australia, China and Spain. In 1998 he was awarded the Gallery Prize by Stockport Municipal Art Gallery for production of the most original painting. Some of John's famous quotes. Aye, it's quite a metamorphosis from rough-necked roofer to protagonist of fine art! But perhaps I'm bringing a bit of joy to the world with a bit of colour and a bit of bitumen.
