It is an evening view of a harbour, looking from a wooded clifftop across the water to a moored boat and black and white lighthouse on the harbour wall. More boats on the sea beyond and industrial buildings on the coastline. The sun is setting behind the trees, turning the sky a fiery shade of red. Signed and dated lower right'LM O6.06.95'. Also numerous labels verso, a personal inscription and the title'...

Ie, red sky at night.. Painted with mixed media (looks to be acrylic, watercolour and pen+ink), varnished. In excellent condition and well presented with a double ivory coloured card mount within a gilt wood frame. The mount is in excellent condition, the frame excellent vintage condition. Glazed and ready to hang. Measures 35 x 40cm including the frame, the painting only is 15 x 20cm. Leonard Manasseh was a modernist architect and an artist, born in Singapore and educated in the UK. He studied at the School of Architecture in Bedford Square and set up his own practice in 1949 after winning a prestigious architectural design competition at the Festival of Britain. His work was much admired and he gained many commissions, most notably Rutherford School (now King Solomon Academy) and Beaulieu Motor Museum in Hampshire as well as many commercial and residential properties. He later taught at the School of Architecture and served as President, also holding the post of President of the Royal West of England Academy during the 80s and 90s. Throughout his life Manasseh drew and painted and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, his paintings demonstrating his fine sense of design and an intense palette. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1979. My aim is to offer a selection of interesting, well researched works with prices starting at just a few pounds and to increase the appreciation of engravings!
