Sicilian abstract painter, set designer and ceramicist. Edoardo Franceschini was born in Catania, the ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. He is first recorded as exhibiting in 1953. In 1954 he designed and created his first important stage set for "Iphigenia in Aulis" by Euripides for the Greek theatre of Palazzo Acride in Syracuse.
Stage design led him to Rome where he collaborated first in the soundstages and later as an assistant to primary set designers. He began his first stays in Milan, which in 1956 became his adopted city, with his studio in via La Marmora and the following year he prepared his first solo show at the Galleria Pater. Thereafter he exhibited in over 120 national and international solo and group exhibitions, among the most important abroad were Tokyo, London, Paris, Valencia, Munich, Brussels and Bern. In 1964 he was invited and participated in the XXXII Venice Biennale. Later in life he began series of journeys from one continent to another, increasingly attentive to other cultures, in particular the far East and Tibetan Buddhism.
The starting point of Franceschini's abstract work is intense colour, which gives life to the forms of the composition, which are continuously meandering, sometimes taught and sometimes relaxed, they are balanced by wide neutral backgrounds that help the forms emerge to create a dynamic, vibrant, "explosive" whole. Edoardo Franceschini died in 2006 at Varese in north-western Lombardy. MUSEUM, Observatory of contemporary art in Sicily, based in Bagheria, hold examples of his work.
