Figueirdo Sobral 1970s Abstract Mixed Media Important Portuguese Modernist

Sobral studied at Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio and was a student of Lino Antonio. During his career, Sobral worked as a designer, illustrator, painter, sculptor, poet, and writer. He first exhibited at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes during the late 1930s and 1940s and became a member of the Portuguese Surrealist Group in the late 1940s.

Sobral had countless solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and in South America, was founder of Minotaur Magazine, designed tapestries, and produced a number of major public sculptures. Sobral's work is in collections worldwide. This mixed media painting is signed upper right. It is titled verso "A Itdade E A Noite" or translated The City and the Night. " It measures 24" x 36 and is in very good condition.
