A limited amount of swatches were given to the public on Opening Day by the Gates Keepers who attended the instillation and helped to create it. During the disassembly of The Gates, a small number of bolts connecting the gates to the still plates placed under every gate were left behind. In accordance with the philosophy of Christo & Jeanne Claude, at the end of the 16-day display, the exhibit and all the materials used to create The Gates, such as metals, aluminum, vinyl and fabric, were donated, shredded, melted and recycled into carpet padding, traffic cones and many other items.
