CHEMLAB Jared Louche unique handmade lyric book BURN OUT signed OBLIVION KING

Limited-edition, hand-made lyric books for Machine Rock band CHEMLABs seminal first album, Burn Out At The Hydrogen Bar. Each one is a unique piece of art designed, crafted and created by CHEMLABs front-man and conceptualist, Jared Louche. On his return from the 2018 USA tour which celebrated 25 years since the release of Burn Out At The Hydrogen Bar , Louche decided to mark the anniversary with these one-of-a-kind lyric books as unique and individually realized commemorative artworks.

Each finished piece incorporates a broad spectrum of materials: the hard covers are sourced from a complete set of a 1934 printing of Charles Dickens books; mediums range from many kinds of paint, ink, chalk and resin; materials include collaged maps, magazines and medical books, as well as physical objects such as pieces of vinyl records, springs, guitar cables, feathers, wires, nails, decaying cloth, insects, broken glass and diodes. The pages feature Burn Out lyrics which have been handwritten by Jared, scanned, customized and bound into the covers. Each book is individually signed and numbered by the artist.

This commemorative Burn Out At The Hydrogen Bar set is extremely limited and will not be repeated. In addition, the set is not yet complete, and therefore specific commissions can still be considered. And finally, as anyone who knows Jared knows, he is always happy to talk about his work, so please feel free to ask him pretty much anything.

Jared says: Using acrylic paint, chrome spray paint, engine and computer parts, POISONING THE OBLIVION KING came out of me in two very distinctly separate stages. The first was the spines of acrylic surrounding the Dickens CD intaglio. It was one of the very first books I approached, but I stopped after the spines because I was unsure of my direction and nothing called to me. So I set it aside, knowing Id return to it eventually. There are other books whose initial attempts Ive utterly covered up under layers of paint, pictures, sandpaper and scatter because I didnt like them or they didnt sing to me.

There was something latent in this one, but to say it was deeply buried is to understate the case! So I kept it, returning to it again and again over the intervening months.

A few weeks ago, I came across a gasket clamp Id pulled out of our car after it got wrecked at the start of the year. Id also just sourced some interesting obtainium: an old PC keyboard as well as some motherboard junk Django had been squirrelling away... And as I was removing the keyboard keys, the whole piece took shape as from drifting smoke. Oblivion King has a very recondite, antediluvian feel to it, almost like a Digital Age illuminated text. The keys on the front cover are specific and heraldic, making reference to the core concept behind the upcoming Chemlab record: Machine God Down.

The back cover features more keys, as well as a kinetic aspect in that the blue cable is attached only at its motherboard base and can be moved to differing, though limited, positions. I very much want to keep this one, but I cant keep them all, so Im sending it out into the ethers.
