There is some damage to the paint in the top right corner where it has started to flake from the surface. Ben Maile was born in Northamptonshire, his family moved to London in 1936 when Ben was fourteen.
He joined the RAF, becoming a wireless operator in Bomber Command. Maile is a self-taught artist and has lived and worked in the UK and latterly before his death in Ireland. Much of his work was popularized through coloured reproduction prints and in America he became the only British artist ever to win the prestigious annual commission from the famous West Point Military Academy. His very first West Point print'The Long Grey Line' became the most sought after of all time among the collectors of American militaria. In Ireland, his penchant for historic epics and earned him a commission from The Army College at the Curragh entitled'The Irish Soldier through the ages' now hanging on the walls of their VIP lounge. Maile has exhibited at the Mansion House, London, Upper Grosvenor Gallery, Medici Gallery, Selfridges, London, Harrods, Cardiff Marine Museum and Aberdeen Art Gallery and abroad in the USA, France and Australia. Examples of his work are in the collections of HM Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Prince Charles, Postal Museum and the Sultan of Brunei. His final years were spent in a care home in Cork, Ireland where he had lived for a number of years. Size: 42 x 98cm (16.5" x 38.6"). Framed Size: 51 x 108cm (20.1" x 42.5"). We operate from dedicated premises in Corsham, Wiltshire and utilise various humidity controlled storage facilities in the local area. The art in our online gallery has been handpicked by our team of highly qualified art historians. We try our hardest to ensure that artworks are described and photographed as accurately as possible. This includes using strobe lighting and colour calibrated screens to colour check our images.
