RAY JOHNSON 1980s, original Mixed Media/object: "Paddle" w/"Bunny" drawing. This "paddle" repainted and "bunny" drawing added by Ray Johnson, (silver ink "waves" on reverse). What adds to the intrigue here is the object chosen looks like it should have been a wooden stirring paddle, kitchen utensil but it lacks any spoon-like quality or a hanging hole in the handle. At first glance it seems more like an oar for a small toy boat.

An interesting bit of 8mm color movie film exists with Ray sitting in a row boat, rowing in circles while a dog is seated across from him barking. This intriguing bit of film takes on a life of its own as a "Ray Johnson" performance. The most striking thing this piece suggests is that all through his artistic career he makes reference to water, drowning, and ultimately died of hypothermia when he fell or jumped off of the Sag Harbor bridge on a winter night, and was seen doing the backstroke like Esther Williams.

When I acquired this piece from Ray it was some years before his death, but the item always struck me as a "hint" of things to come Ray left lots of clues over the years before his death; his final performance piece. Not Pop Art, or Fluxus, not Performance Art or Surrealist, but Ray Johnson dances upon all of these like a large stone skipping across the water of the ocean's ebb and flow. Johnson's unique blend of humor, and wit and a style all his own has a very unique place in Art History.
