One of the Artist's iconic early works. The condition is very good, unframed, with two small pin holes in each upper corner, that is how the piece was exhibited in the Gallery in 2001. The piece has been stored carefully in a plastic sleeve in a file cabinet so no fading or discoloration. A wonderful original signed piece offered at no reserve by one of the unique talents in contemporary American art. Please see Biography and history below.

Daniel is a genius working in both the field of art and music, see biography below, there is also more information available on Google and Wikipedia among other internet sources. If you have a chance to visit Daniels web site is it a great resource, it will come up on Google, or type in (hi how are you dot com). The web site has artworks for sale, (see store shop art archival tabs) and the archival or older ones are particularly prized, in part because some did not survive, Daniel in some cases would trade a drawing for a soda or pack of cigarettes back in the day. These artworks are all at least 17 years old.

The art gallery curator and the Daniel did their best to select the best of the best of Daniels work which makes sense for the first one man show of any artist. A good painting by a good artist is always worthwhile but a painting from the artists first one man show is a little something extra (for example, a work from the first one man show of Warhol or Basquiat has great value, historical value as well as artistic value). Daniel had a few artworks shown in a gallery in New York City and in the 01 Gallery itself, but this was his first one man show. Arguably he is primarily known as a musician, but he became so well regarded as an artist that in 2006, Daniel's art was featured in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial with more than a dozen of his works on view in that prestigious New York venue and has been widely shown over the years.

The production next shot Daniel in July 2001 in Los Angeles during two important events: a solo art exhibition opening at the legendary Zero One Gallery, and his headline performance at the Key Club in the heart of the Sunset Strip. These events drew Hollywood luminaries like Matt Groening and Wild Man Fischer.

The filming of the concert at the Key Club was done in high-contrast black and white in conceptual homage to Daniels spiritual mentor Bob Dylan in Dont Look Back. Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists -- among them the Dead Milkmen, Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground's songs. And he as collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese, who've also done Daniel's songs), the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth.

Daniel gained his widest public exposure to date when, at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt. Surprisingly, the bulk of his considerable acclaim snowballed from a series of homemade, lo-fi cassettes which Daniel started recording and handing out to fans and friends alike in the early 80s. Eventually, the independent label Homestead re-issued some of these tapes on CD, and Johnston recorded a few new albums in almost-proper studios. Daniel was born in 1961 in Sacramento, California, the youngest of five children in a Christian fundamentalist household.

He and his family soon moved to New Cumberland, West Virginia, where his father, an engineer and World War II fighter pilot, landed a job with Quaker State. Drawing for a long time before he took up music, Daniel grew to appreciate such artists John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Bob Dylan, David Bromberg, Queen, Neil Young, the Sex Pistols, and especially The Beatles. When I was 19, I wanted to be The Beatles. I was disappointed when I found out I couldn't sing.

" That Liverpudlian quartet continues to inspire Daniel today, who sings, "My heart looked to art and I found The Beatles /. While it would be years before Daniel committed his first songs to tape, he began composing at an early age. When I was a kid, probably nine, I used to bang around on the piano, making up horror movie themes. When I got a bit older, I'd be mowing my lawn and I'd make up songs and sing them. No one could hear me'cause of the lawn mower. As a teenager, Daniel and his friends began to record their own tapes and trade them among themselves. After high school, he attended an art program at a branch of Kent State near his family's home. This was a prolific period of his life. Unemployed, and attending classes sporadically, he began to spend most of his time in his family's cellar, writing and recording.

The tapes he made there included "Songs of Pain" and "More Songs of Pain, " which both centered around his unrequited love for a woman named Laurie who ended up marrying an undertaker. The aspiring cartoonist -- whose playful, symbol-heavy sketches have graced the covers of may of his releases, including "Fun" -- moved to Texas in 1983. First he went to Houston, living with his brother and working at Astro World, while also recording the seminal tapes "Yip/Jump Music" and Hi, How Are You?

These recordings featured such classics as "Speeding Motorcycle, " "Sorry Entertainer, " and odes to everyone from "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "King Kong" to The Beatles. It was like a movie all the time. Everybody around me was a great story that never stopped, and for the first time, I realized how much freedom you have to do what you want. Throughout his career, Daniel's songs and drawings have been informed to some degree by his ongoing struggle with manic depression -- lending an added poignancy to his soul-searching times. His five-month stint with the carney left him in Austin, where he decided to stay. In the midst of that city's mid-eighties music scene, Johnston was a definite iconoclast. Soon, a camera crew from MTV's seminal "Cutting Edge" show came to town and all the Austin bands suggested they feature Daniel. More from the MOVIE Press Kit. The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a stunning portrait of a musical and artistic genius who nearly slipped away. Director Jeff Feuerzeig exquisitely depicts a perfect example of brilliance and madness going hand in hand with subject Daniel Johnston. As an artist suffering from manic depression with delusions of grandeur, Daniel Johnston¹s wild fluctuations, numerous downward spirals, and periodic respites are exposed in this deeply moving documentary.

As a reclusive teenager growing up in New Cumberland, VA, Johnston began showing signs of unusual artistic ability at an early age. He religiously recorded his thoughts and stories onto cassette tapes, directed intuitive Super- 8 films starring himself in multiple roles ala Peter Sellers, and created expressive comic book-style drawings and animation in the basement of his family's home.

However, in the eyes of his fundamentalist Christian family, Daniel simply wasn't contributing to society in a useful or productive way. After running off on a moped and joining a carnival, he landed in Austin, Texas, broke and alone. It was there he began to hone his musical career, recording folk songs on a series of homemade, lo-fi cassettes, which Daniel handed out free to fans, friends and journalists in the early 80s. With the help of a timely break and the thriving Austin music scene, Daniel managed to secure a brief spotlight on MTV making him a minor celebrity.

But just as he was beginning to make a name for himself, his inner demons began to surface and Daniel¹s ongoing struggle with manic depression became more and more evident in his songs and drawings. The Devil and Daniels Johnston artfully melds current footage, vintage performances, home movies, and dozens of recorded audiotapes from Daniel's life. Testimony from supportive friends and a deeply committed family adds a rich layer to his personal history, but it is Daniel¹s poetic songs interwoven throughout the film, that tell their own passionate, haunting, and truly unforgettable story.

Now in his mid-40s, Daniel Johnston has grown into a prolific visual artist. His expressions have earned him worldwide recognition and critical praise, producing international exhibits where he continues to sell his vibrant and intimate sketches. He has recorded over ten full length albums, and his supporters have included Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, who was often seen wearing a Daniel Johnston t shirt, Matt Groening, The Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, noted Minutemen/FIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Beck, The Flaming Lips, and an ever-growing international cult audience.
