Circa 20 x 18 inches, signed lower left "Twombly 6-4-72"; one of the most famous American post-war artists who some scholars associate with the abstract expressionist movement; Twombly had his first art exhibit at thje Kootz Gallery c. 1951; provenance: Samuel Kootz; Kootz sent a group of abstract and other paintings to a Los Angeles collector in the early 1970's; the collector died; then to his window; private California collection. One may ask why Kootz had so many Twombly paintings (1) First Kootz considered himself a "patrondealer" that is he helped the starving artists financially and Kootz received their paintings; (2) Kootz was an art dealer and also a lawyer who went to an elite law school (University of Virginia -- where he was a member of the law review); the code of conduct for art dealers back in the 1950's and 1960's is they did not sell paintings by artists who were represented by different art dealers; Twombly was represented by Leo Castelli (not Kootz) so Kootz probably believed it was improper to sell Twombly's paintings -- so they accumulated!!!!!!!!!
Another odd point is all of the works on paper are either dated 1963 Roma or 6-4-72 or no date. Twombly moved to Rome circa 1959 but spent much time in New York City.
