It appeared in the Cuban plastic scene in the 70s. It is recognized as one of the key figures of contemporary Cuban art.

Several periods are recognized in Zaida's painting. The first thing was the countryside with its tobacco houses, the children, the landscape. Then came the horses: Horse disease. Then came the circus and its colorful characters. Then came the triptychs about Afro-Cuban religion.

Later came the peacocks; and finally "The Cosmic Dance of Shiva" (2010) in which the artist, moved by Hindu philosophy, expresses the great passion that confers on this oriental culture. Blessed is the country that has an artist like Zaida del Río, who at the same time expresses her creative individuality and, without resigning herself to the trite paths of the emblematic, she sings of her surroundings and, more, of her roots. In his figuration, where dream and reality are united, his obsessions are outlined, but in some capricious way appears the world from which he has emerged and bears a sign.
