Alvar Carillo Gil began with the acquisition of the drawing "La Chole" by Jose Clemente Orozco and he later became the main collector of Jose Clemente Orozo and likewise began to acquire works of the most important Mexican painters of the first half of the 20th century. He studied medicine at the University of Yucatan, specializing in pediatrics at the Sorbonne. He practiced his profession, first in his home state and then in Mexico City achieving considerable fame as a physician.
In 1969, Carillo Gil entrusted Fernando Gamboa with the project for the creation of a museum to house his entire collection. He also commissioned the renowned Mexican architect, Augusto H. Alvarez, with the architectural project. Throughout the years that followed, he was getting a good amount of works, to the point that at the end of the decade of the 40's all the official exhibitions organized by the National Institute of Fine Arts were based on the paintings of the Carillo Gil Collection. In August of 1974, his wife, Carmen Tejero de Carillo Gil, inaugurated the museum in the company of Fernando Gamboa.
